Best Kept Local Gems in Seattle | Food Edition

Seattle is full of secret spots and food treasures, but if you’re a solo traveler looking to skip the tourist traps and eat like a local, I’ve got you covered. From flaky breakfast sandwiches tucked in quiet neighborhoods to spicy Latin Caribbean sandwiches and unforgettable donuts, these are the best kept food gems in Seattle— all taste-tested by yours truly and totally worth the detour. Let’s dig in!

🥯 Ben’s Bread Co. – Phinney Ridge

If you’re wondering where the best breakfast sandwich in Seattle lives, it’s hiding in Phinney Ridge at Ben’s Bread Co. Don’t be surprised if you see a line wrapped around the building—it’s for a reason. Only on Saturdays and Sundays, they drop a few incredible sandwich options, and the standout is hands down the “Fancy Breakfast Sandwich.”

With a soufflé egg, Ferndale Farms fontina, and a dreamy brioche bun, this sandwich is pure breakfast heaven for just $9. Light on ingredients, but big on flavor and texture—it’s that kind of how-is-this-so-good magic you’ll keep thinking about.

🍩 9th and Hennepin Donuts – West Seattle

Came for a coffee date and fell in love with this donut shop! 9th and Hennepin is a moody little donut shop in West Seattle serving fresh-fried donuts made to order, using local and seasonal ingredients. The menu rotates daily, so there’s always something new to try.

One time I had a chocolate donut topped with an exquisite molè sauce, and my life hasn’t been the same since. This is the kind of place that makes you want to come back tomorrow—and the day after that.

🍜 Ramen Danbo – Capitol Hill

This one’s a favorite among locals, and trust me, Ramen Danbo is worth the wait. They don’t take reservations, so get there early or add your name and grab a drink nearby while you wait. Their Fukuoka-Style Tonkotsu Ramen broth is next-level savory, and solo dining at the ramen bar just feels right. It goes well paired with gyoza and a Sapporo beer.

🥟 Dough Zone – International District

No-fuss, cozy vibes and perfect dumplings. There’s a reason locals line up early for dumplings at Dough Zone. The Q-bao and soup dumplings are must-orders, and it’s solo-travel friendly if you love sampling a bit of everything. I usually order pork soup dumplings and onion pancakes.

🍣 Tsukushinbo – International District

If you want unreal sushi without the flashy scene, Tsukushinbo is your spot. A true local gem that requires a reservation, but the authentic vibes and melt-in-your-mouth sushi are so worth it.

🍗 Bok-a-Bok – Capitol Hill (Takeout Only)

Although Bok-a-Bok earned its moment of fame for its Fried Chicken Sandwiches on Guy Fieri’s show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”, their Kimchi Mac and Cheese deserves just as much recognition. Their velvety Mac and cheese recipe, paired with their homemade kimchi creates the perfect umami taste – especially with a side of tater tots. All my friends request to go back to this spot because it’s THAT good.

One thing to keep in mind is Bok-a-Bok in Capital hill offers take-out only. I recommend to order for take-out, then walk to this secret, quiet spot to enjoy your Mac and cheese outdoors (only one block away). Walk over to Pike Street & 11th Ave, then head towards Chophouse Row. Keep an eye out for signs that say “Shop the Alley”. You will see a beautiful alley way adorned with vines, walk through until the end where the court area is. You will see places to sit and enjoy your food.

🍜 Pho Bac Súp Shop – Various Locations

The parking situation on 12th & Jackson is a nightmare, and the website won’t impress you, but once you’re slurping their broth—you’ll understand the hype. A true Seattle staple for Vietnamese comfort food, Pho Bac offers some of the best pho in the city. It’s my favorite place to eat pho, especially on a cold winter day. My favorite location is the Pho Bac Súp Shop location on 12th & Jackson, however they have other locations around the city.

They just opened up a new location in Downtown Seattle, and what set’s this location apart is their Speakeasy found upstairs named Phocific Standard Time (PST). Just like their restaurants, the Speakeasy also operates on a first-come first-serve basis. Check out their Instagram here.

🥪 Un Bien – Ballard & Magnolia

If you ask any Seattle local where to get the best sandwich, they’ll probably point you to Un Bien. This Caribbean-Latin fusion spot is bursting with flavor, spice, and juicy perfection. Most love the Caribbean Roast, but I always get the Tofu Delight with a cold Tamarindo Jarritos on the side. A flavor bomb in every bite.

🐟 Emerald City Fish & Chips – Rainier Beach

Every now and then, someone surprises me with a local gem—and this was one of those moments. Crispy, golden fish with a flaky inside and thick, flavorful fries. This is comfort food done right.

🇵🇪 Don Lucho’s – North Seattle

In the mood for Peruvian food? Don Lucho’s has bold, beautiful dishes bursting with citrus, spice, and everything nice. Their Lomo Saltado is fire, and their sandwiches will leave you full and happy.

🥘 Bongos Green Lake

Craving bold Caribbean flavors with a tropical twist? Head over to Bongo’s, a colorful, casual gem tucked near Green Lake. This spot serves up mouthwatering Cuban and Caribbean-style plates, perfect for a sunny day lunch or laid-back dinner. Their jerk chicken plate and fried plantains are must-tries, and the beachy outdoor patio makes you feel like you’ve escaped to the islands.
