One way to bring in the New Year in Isla Holbox is to reserve a bougie NYE four course meal at an upscale restaurant. Many of the upscale resorts and restaurants host a New Year’s Eve dinner, most of which include a preset four course meal menu. They tend to be pricey and range anywhere from $2500-$3500 mxn pesos per person ($120 – $180 USD). I don’t eat enough to make the most of the four course meal, so I opted out of the preset NYE dinners. Some of these upscale spots are Monono Omakase Bar, Basico and Lazaro.

Instead, I stuck to tacos to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Isla Holbox. I hit up Tacos Bebote Holbox and Los Tacos de Barbacoa taco stand, both of which were phenomenal! My favorite was ordering Quesabirria with consumé from Los Tacos de Barbacoa taco stand. The tacos option cost me $35-$60 mxn pesos ($2 – $3 USD) per taco depending on the type of meat.

There are so many ways to bring in the New Year in Isla Holbox. It’s all about finding the way that meets your scene. Here are ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Isla Holbox.

Bring in NYE at a Beach Club

Along the beach, there are an abundance of beach clubs where you can dance the night away to a live DJ. You usually need to spend a minimum per person to enjoy the beach club.

Bar Hop Around the Local Bar Scene

Isla Holbox offers a variety of bars to check out while in town. One way many people celebrated NYE was by bar hopping throughout the night.

Dance the Night Away with Locals at the Plaza

To be honest, this was the best way to welcome in the new year in Isla Holbox. The plaza (near Parque Central de Holbox) had a live Cumbia band that played the best Mexican hits like “Mi Sufrir”, “Liston de tu Pelo” along with other Cumbia classics. Everyone hit the dance floor with their best moves, from abuelitas (grandmothers) and kids to foreigners who were eager to match the vibe.

Dancing the night away in the plaza was so much fun! I’m so glad this was how I brought in the new year! There were a ton of Europeans and they embraced the Mexican music as much as I did (as a Mexican-American who grew up listening to Cumbia). Everywhere I turned, people were adorned with huge smiles on their faces. I can’t get over how beautiful it was to have music bring people across different ages, cultures and languages together.

Enjoy Views of the Plaza from a Rooftop Bar

When you want a rest bit from the dancing but still want to be in the energy, head up to the rooftop bar across the plaza for a classy drink. I started the night here before the Cumbia band came on stage and it was a great place to relax while I waited for the party to start. I also headed here after I was tired from dancing.

Indulge in Midnight Snacks like Marquesitas

Along the plaza you will find small snack stands serving both sweet and savoring antojitos throughout the night. If you get hungry from dancing to Cumbias in the plaza, you can always take a snack break and order a Marquesita from the Marquesitas Holbox stand from the corner of the plaza on Calle Portofino Diaz and Calle Tiburon Ballena.
