Dreamy Day Trip to Tlaquepaque, Mexico: Art & Colonial Charm

Planning a day trip to Tlaquepaque, Mexico? This charming town just 20 minutes from Guadalajara is full of colonial beauty, vibrant artisan culture, and delicious local eats. With cobblestone streets, colorful papel picado, and whimsical boutiques, Tlaquepaque is the kind of place that feels like it belongs in a romance novel. Here’s how I spent a magical day exploring one of Jalisco’s most enchanting towns.

How to Get to Tlaquepaque from Guadalajara

On this particular trip, I had a friend visiting me in Guadalajara, and I knew she had to experience the charm of Tlaquepaque. Located just about 7 miles (11 km) from the city, getting there was super easy—our Uber dropped us off right at the edge of the pedestrian zone in under 30 minutes.

How We Started Our Dreamy Day Trip to Tlaquepaque

We had a relaxed morning in Guadalajara, starting with a cafecito (Spanish for “coffee”) and light breakfast before heading south. Once we arrived, we were ready to indulge—and indulge we did! Tlaquepaque is known for its food scene, especially the seafood. For lunch, we treated ourselves to some delicious mariscos (Spanish for “seafood”) before beginning our exploration.

What to Do in Tlaquepaque on a Day Trip

After lunch, we took our time wandering through the streets of Tlaquepaque, letting curiosity lead the way. Walking down Calle Independencia felt like stepping into a technicolor dream. Colonial-style buildings painted in warm hues, whimsical umbrellas strung overhead, and seasonal papel picado floating in the breeze—it was magic.

Started off the day roaming Calle Independencia.

This pedestrian street is the heart of Tlaquepaque and a visual feast. We popped into artisan shops filled with handmade pottery, colorful textiles, and blown glass treasures. I picked up a small bottle of local tequila, and my friend found some stunning silver earrings. Fun fact: cities like Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque are known for their silver jewelry, crafted by local artisans who are keeping centuries-old traditions alive.

As we explored Tlaquepaque, we got a glimpse of local living and were smitten with the colonial architecture and slow paced living. We felt completely safe wandering, camera in hand, stopping for a seat under the shade to people-watch and soak up the energy. It’s not just picturesque — it’s alive with culture and pride. You can feel the heart of Jalisco here.

Later, we cooled off with paletas from a local shop. A paleta is a traditional frozen treat, similar to a popsicle, but made with fresh, natural ingredients and often featuring a variety of flavors beyond basic fruit. I went for a creamy pecan paleta—chef’s kiss—and my friend got a mango with chamoy one. Sitting on a bench with a paleta in hand, I had a fleeting thought: maybe I should quit my corporate job and move to Tlaquepaque. (Spoiler: I didn’t. But I totally romanticized the idea.)

Ending Our Day Trip with a Romantic Dinner

Our last stop was dinner at Casa Luna, and let me tell you—it was straight out of a fairytale. The indoor trees were wrapped in twinkle lights and heart-shaped blown glass ornaments. The ambiance was dreamy, the cocktails were divine, and the food? Next level. I highly recommend the queso fundido and pollo en mole de canela—they were chef’s kiss good. Prices are reasonable (around $25 USD per person), especially considering the elevated experience.
